Description from the seller

August Wilhelm Dieffenbacher
Am Ufer
Munich School, early 20th century
Oil on canvas
32 × 44 cm
Signed in red lower right: “A. Dieffenbacher München”
Titled on the reverse: “Am Ufer”

An atmospheric Munich School landscape depicting a quiet waterside village setting. The composition emphasizes tonal harmony and mood, with softened architectural forms and reflections rendered in a restrained palette of browns, greys, and ochres. The work reflects Barbizon-influenced naturalism as interpreted by Munich-trained painters, prioritizing atmosphere and subdued light over descriptive detail.

Condition:
The painting shows evidence of a previous owner’s attempted restoration, visible in the images provided, including localized overpainting and surface irregularities. These interventions appear non-professional and are noticeable on close inspection. The work is offered in as-found condition, without recent conservation assessment.

A characteristic cabinet-size work by Dieffenbacher from his Munich period.
