The coin shown is a commemorative medal minted in 1980 to celebrate the millennium of the founding of the Principality of Liège. The year 980 is traditionally regarded as the beginning of the Liege state, when the then-bishop Notger was granted secular power by Emperor Otto III, making him a prince-bishop.
