Description from the seller
Monumental Empire Style Silver-Plated Center piece with Cut Crystal Bowl – c. 1900
Impressive and large Empire-style table center piece, dating from the early 20th century (circa 1900).
This elegant object combines a silver-plated pedestal base with a finely cut crystal bowl, resulting in a highly decorative and timeless center piece.
The crystal bowl features a deep star-cut base and a scalloped rim, typical of quality European crystal production of the period. It is held within a richly decorated silver-plated gallery, adorned with classical Empire motifs:
winged mythological creatures (griffins or sphinxes) flanking a classical urn, symbolising strength, symmetry and antiquity — hallmarks of the Empire and Neoclassical style.
The stepped circular foot is finished with a laurel-leaf border, reinforcing the Napoleonic aesthetic. The substantial weight and refined detailing indicate high-quality European manufacture. Although unsigned, the craftsmanship and materials clearly place this piece in the upper decorative segment of its time.
Traditionally used as a fruit bowl, dessert centrepiece or table ornament in formal dining rooms and salons.
