This painting grew out of my daily walks with my dog in de Vrok, a small, man-made nature reserve just south of Groningen. It's a place I almost visit every day, where the sunsets are different each time, yet always equally impressive.
In this work I captured a moment in which I look out over the water. I stood on the bridge and painted the view as I experienced it there. The horizon is placed relatively high in the frame, making the water and the reflections take on a central role. The surface of the water catches the light and reflects the colors of the sky, which creates a sense of calm and depth in the composition.
The landscape takes on a warm glow under the setting sun. That warmth is most visible in the copses along the water's edge, softly lighting against the cooling evening light.
