Seen, real name Richard Mirando, was born in 1961 in the Bronx where he grew up and still lives today. Even as a youngster he was already a prodigy in the plastic arts. He was given his first airbrush at the age of 11. Two years later, Seen created decorative paintings on behalf of his uncle, who owned an auto body shop. He then customized his first vehicles.
The graffiti movement was in full swing at that time. Richard is fascinated by the painted and rolling subway trains parked in the Lexington Avenue yard on the 6 line, right behind his uncle's garage. He sneaked into the yard on a Saturday afternoon in 1973 and created his first 'piece'. He chose the nickname 'Seen'. He likes the sequence of the two E's, and the meaning resonates with him. Creating graffiti becomes for Seen the way to fulfill his desire to be seen by as many people as possible.
His first brush with painting is a revelation. From a simple spectator, he became an active participant in the youth movement. The subway becomes his preferred medium. Having then become involved, he continues the actions and reaches the point of painting entire cars (Whole cars) that will forever mark the spirit of New York. His name and his art travel around the city on trains used every day by hundreds of thousands of people. His unique style, creativity, and tenacity make him a leader in the underground graffiti movement of New York in the 1980s.
In 1982, the documentary film Style Wars by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant made it an icon of the movement around the world. Recognized by his peers as the “godfather of graffiti,” Seen is today the most famous graffiti artist, whose influence is unprecedented.
