Description from the seller
Large Japanese Imari Porcelain Dish – Late 19th Century
Large and finely decorated Japanese Imari porcelain dish dating to the late 19th century (Meiji period).
The dish features a well-defined dentilled rim and rests on a basal ring. The central roundel depicts a flower-filled pot, executed in classic Imari palette with underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red with gilt accents.
The cavetto is divided into bold decorative panels with blossoming branches, floral sprays, and stylised motifs, arranged in a dynamic and balanced composition. The reverse is decorated with bats and additional ornamental elements, a symbol traditionally associated with good fortune and happiness in East Asian art.
The painting is confident and vibrant, with strong contrasts and fine detailing typical of high-quality Imari production intended for export during the Meiji period.
Condition
Very good condition for its age.
No cracks or restorations observed. Minor firing imperfections and light wear consistent with age and use.
Provenance
Ex Italian private collection
Acquired in the 1970s
Accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by Dr. Raffaele D’Amato, Head of the Antiquities Department; Purchase in 2025 by an UK auction House
This is an impressive and decorative example of late 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain, suitable for collectors of Asian ceramics or as a statement display piece.
