Description from the seller

Uchikagi 鉤縄(うちかぎ)

This is a traditional Japanese uchikagi, also known as a kaginawa, a grappling hook. This is hard to date it but it could be from the late Edo period. Ninja fulfilled roles similar to modern-day spies, and the uchikagi was one of the essential tools that supported stealth movement and infiltration.

The uchikagi was used by throwing the hook onto walls, castle ramparts, cliffs, or rooftops and climbing using the attached chain.
Most historical examples use rope, making this iron chain construction a particularly rare and notable specification.

The chain is modern, and some parts show welded construction.

In addition to its use as a climbing aid, the uchikagi could also function as a weapon, capable of injuring an opponent when necessary.
This dual-purpose design reflects the practical and adaptable nature of ninja tools.

Forged entirely from iron by skilled metalworkers, this piece embodies the functional aesthetics and ingenuity of Japanese martial culture.
It is an exceptional object for collectors of samurai and ninja artifacts, as well as those interested in historical Japanese weaponry.
