With bold colors and expressive brushwork, Peter Robert Keil captures the fascinating aura of the Italian film diva Sophia Loren. The portrayal is intense, unmistakably Keil: a smoky gaze that is at once strong, enigmatic, and self-confident.
The contrast between the luminous planes, the deep-blue iris, and the iconic cigarette gives the work an almost cinematic drama — as if Loren herself were standing in the blinding spotlight of a Roman film set.
The composition exudes vitality, directness, and artistic immediacy—a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically talented mother struggled through the final phase of the war with her son to West Berlin, where the two settled after the war. There, Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon developed an interest in painting—particularly in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, originally from East Berlin, became his mentor around 1954 and taught him initial craft skills and painting techniques.
