About the artists:

The group hails from Berlin-Kreuzberg and has been active since 2003. It is unclear how many people belong to the group. Most graffiti by 1UP in public space is illegal, as they were not approved by the owners of the spaces. In 2011, 1UP released the film “One United Power,” which documents the group’s activities. For this film, the group was internationally active and painted, among other places, in Paris, Istanbul, and Thailand. The premiere took place on December 10, 2011 at the Babylon cinema. The Urban Spree gallery in Berlin exhibited some works by One United Power in September 2014 under the title “I am 1UP.” In May 2015, the second edition of the photo book “I am 1UP” was published by Publikat Verlag.

By August 2017, the police had recorded more than 300 criminal charges against 1UP. Nevertheless, the Berlin State Office of Criminal Investigation could not apprehend the group since 2003, because its changing members come from both domestic and international sources and leave few traces that could lead to their capture. Thus the graffiti artists are always masked, wear gloves, and preemptively tamper with the video surveillance.

Since May 2018, a touring exhibition titled "One week with 1UP" has been touring worldwide through cities such as Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, New York, Milan, etc., featuring images created as part of a collaboration with the famous street-art photographer Martha Cooper. At the same time, the book of the same name for the exhibition was published. In some cities, among other things, art objects with a connection to illegal actions are exhibited, such as three-dimensional letters made from hundreds of used mobile phones belonging to the group.

Similar artists: Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Gerhard Richter, Banksy, Marina Abramović, Yoko Ono, David Hockney, Ai Weiwei, Goin, Invader
