Description from the seller
Solid glass display box (6x6 cm) containing 7 beautiful australites of high quality and varied shapes, their individual weights are 220 mg, 450 mg, 678 mg, 965 mg, 1.145 g, 1.640 g and 1.780 g. The total weight of the 7 tectites is 6.880 g.
Australian tektites are tektites, that is, fragments of natural glass formed by the impact of a meteorite, found in Australia. They are distinguished by their rounded shape, like discs or bowls, and their dark to black color, or with a unique "button-with-flange" shape that is said to have inspired NASA in the design of the Apollo program's re-entry modules.
Origin: They are formed by the fusion of rocks from the Earth due to the impact of a meteorite in the Australasia region.
Characteristics: They are generally black or dark-colored, and have a unique shape that is not found in other tectites.
Age: They are about 770,000 years old.
• Australian tektites (Australites) have been known and used as artifacts and ritual objects by the Aboriginal Australians for more than 30,000 years
Although various theories persist regarding the origin of tektites, most scientists today agree that they formed during the impact of a large asteroid or comet on Earth. This impact propelled a multitude of small rock fragments out of Earth's atmosphere. Tektites acquired their streamlined and aerodynamic shape during their atmospheric entry, in a melted state and at high speed.
Most Australites are found in southern Australia, south of the 25th parallel. They form the southern boundary of the vast Australasian tectonic dispersion field that extends from southern China to Australia and results from an impact that occurred in Indochina.
However, recently, other scientists believe that the fact that Australites are only found in southern Australia suggests that the impact which formed them likely occurred in Antarctica. Stay tuned...
7 fine Australites of good quality and varied shapes (round, pyramidal, oval...), their individual weights are respectively 220 mg, 450 mg, 678 mg, 965 mg, 1.145 g, 1.640 g and 1.780 g. The total weight of the 7 tektites is 6.880 g.
