Description from the seller
A large antique pewter charger by John Duncomb and with touchmarks to the base confirming the maker and stamped 'London'. The charger is 40cm (15.75") in diameter, in good period condition and with clear touchmarks. This is a rare and substantial example weighing 1.71kg (3.75Ibs).
John Duncomb was an English pewterer active in London and Birmingham in the first half of the 18th century, roughly between 1718 and 1745. Pewterers often stamped their work with marks for authenticity, and Duncomb's stamps (sometimes spelled Duncombe) are found on quality tableware from this period, he produced pewter plates, chargers, tankards, and other wares; these are recognised by his distinctive touchmark, sometimes accompanied by the word "London", as this piece.
The early 18th century was a notable time for English pewter being prized for its craftsmanship and its association with the transition from wooden and silver tablewares to more affordable pewter. Duncomb's wares, especially large chargers, are collected for their robust construction, utilitarian design, and period authenticity.
