Description from the seller
Main features of the work
Tonino Caputo (1933–2021) • “Old Harbour 1930” • Acrylic on canvas • 80 × 80 cm • Signed on the lower left • Signature and title on the back • Provenance: Italian private collection.
A work belonging to the urban realism movement of the twentieth century.
Inspired by 1930s New York, this port view presents an extraordinary visual power and a significant format (80×80 cm), which confer the work with an immediate and authoritative presence. The harbor is depicted as an operative and productive place: tugboats and boats traverse the basin, while along the quays warehouses, silos, and tall smoking chimneys line up. In the background emerges a compact, vertical skyline that directly links the port to the great industrial city.
The scene is rich in elements and visual planes, with numerous architectural and infrastructural details that enliven the composition and effectively convey the complexity and intensity of the port landscape. The painting is sharp, orderly, and surprisingly legible, with bold colors and a solid construction of the scene.
A work datable, by stylistic and technical characteristics, to the late seventies and early eighties, with the title “Old Harbour 1930” understood as a historical and iconographic reference to the industrial city of the early decades of the twentieth century. The signature on the front and the signature with title on the back clearly confirm the autograph; the work does not require a frame and can be displayed as is.
Tonino Caputo has developed a recognizable and coherent form of urban painting, capable of transforming architectures and infrastructures into strong, instantly legible images. His work has focused on urban views and modern architectures, approached with a clear and direct figurative language and with subjects inspired by the imagery of the great city of the Twentieth Century.
The buyer will receive the artwork in carefully packed and sturdy packaging. Very fast shipping. Free pickup available in Monza/Milan.
