Arthur Haeghebaert was a Belgian painter born in Assebroek in 1876 and died in Roeselare in 1942. He pursued his training at the Academy in Bruges under P. Raoux and E. Van Hove, at the Academy in Antwerp under E. Siberdt and A. De Vriendt, and at the Academy in Brussels (1896–1897). During the First World War he went into exile in the Netherlands, where he stayed until 1922. He settled in 1924 in Knokke, later in Duinbergen, where he ran a gallery. He was friends with, among others, J. Ensor, H. Permeke and Is. Opsomer. He produced portraits, landscapes, Bruges cityscapes, and the Stations of the Cross. His Stations of the Cross can be found, among others, in the churches of Vlissingen and Klerken.
