VANTA presents Oblivion, an original oil on canvas portrait (170 cm by 140 cm) signed by the artist, created in 2025, in contemporary blue tones from Austria.
Description from the seller
“Oblivion” (2025)
Oil on canvas
170 x 140 cm
A male face in profile materializes from dark vivid blue through meticulous paint removal. Working with a single shade of blue, VANTA has created all tonal variation by controlling how much pigment to remove - carefully building up lighter areas where more paint has been taken away, preserving darker passages where the original application remains largely intact. The result captures remarkable detail and dimensionality within this narrow chromatic range.
The profile orientation gives the face a contemplative quality, caught in a moment of stillness against the deep blue surround. Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki, the piece shows how patient, precise removal can coax form from a monochrome field. Cheekbone, brow, nose, lips - all emerge through graduated removal that suggests light and shadow without ever breaking from that single blue.
The large canvas allows the face to establish presence while maintaining significant blue field around it. This negative space becomes as important as the revealed figure, creating the darkness from which the profile emerges and threatening to reclaim it. The face exists in perpetual tension between emergence and dissolution.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
