Angelika Platen (born 1942) is one of the most prominent German photographers in the field of artist portrait photography. Since the late 1960s, she has precisely documented the faces and personalities of the international art scene—with emerging talents and world-renowned icons. Her photographs depict artists not only as public figures but also as individuals in focused, often intimate moments. Among her most famous portraits are images of Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Marina Abramović, Georg Baselitz, Neo Rauch, Ai Weiwei, Wolfgang Tillmans, and many others.
Platen prefers to work in black and white and relies on natural lighting and authentic settings – often in her studio, during work, or in personal situations. Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions, including the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and the ZKM in Karlsruhe.
