Description from the seller
Rare antique Orthodox icon – Saint Evangelist John the Theologian
A particularly expressive and characterful Orthodox icon depicting Saint John the Theologian (Evangelist), recognizable by the open Gospel book and the eagle behind him — his traditional symbol within Christian iconography. John is depicted in a contemplative pose, giving this icon a strong spiritual and meditative appearance.
The icon is hand-painted on wood using traditional techniques. The warm earth tones, refined facial expression, and the visibly aged paint layer create an authentic patina that can only develop with time. The angel figure and the symbolic eagle refer to the divine inspiration of his Gospel.
The frame and the surface show clear signs of wear and craquelure, appropriate to the age and fully in keeping with original Orthodox icons.
Who is he? Johannes the Theologian is to us better known as Johannes the Evangelist. He is always depicted with a beard because he wrote down his story at an advanced age, banished to Patmos as a political refugee. There the vision of the end of the world was given to him by an angel. He symbolizes the mystical and the contemplative. The 'silence' is depicted by the typical pose with two fingers to his mouth.
Carefully packed and shipped insured.
