Description from the seller

Lapis lazuli sculpture depicting Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru)
Description of the work
Refined sculpture in solid lapis lazuli carved in the round, depicting the Buddha in a meditative pose (asana). The figure is seated on a stylized lotus flower base, with the right hand raised in the Abhaya Mudra, the mudra of protection and reassurance ("fear not"). The left hand rests in the lap in the meditation position (Dhyana Mudra).
Technical Details
* Material: natural lapis lazuli with golden pyrite inclusions (which confer the 'starry sky' effect) and white calcite veins.
* Height: about 8 cm.
* Weight: 131.55 g.
* Era/Origin: China, likely manufactured in the 20th century
Iconographic Analysis and Country of Origin
The choice of lapis lazuli is not random: in Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist tradition, this material is closely linked to the figure of Bhaisajyaguru, better known as the Buddha of Medicine (or the Buddha of Lapis Light). The deep blue color symbolizes spiritual purity and healing power.
Although the classical iconography of the Medicine Buddha often envisions a jar of ointment in the left hand, the combination of this specific blue material with the gesture of protection (Abhaya) suggests a function as a protective amulet for health and domestic serenity. The carving style, characterized by gentle facial features and compact volumes, is typical of Chinese lapidary craftsmanship, renowned for the working of hard stones.
