It is generally assumed that the glasses most likely formed during the impact of a meteorite that is believed to have fallen in North Africa about 28 to 30 million years ago. Under high pressure and temperatures, the sandstone exposed at the surface at that time was melted, and the liquid melt was ejected. Rapid cooling during the flight phase could have resulted in the formation of glass. However, an impact crater has not yet been found.
The desert glass consists of 98% Lechatelierite, a natural quartz glass. Inclusions of Baddeleyite, which forms at temperatures above 1700 °C from zircon sand, as well as traces of the meteorite (up to 0.5%), have been detected, ruling out a formation as a deposit of a lake enriched with dissolved silicon dioxide, a hypothesis also discussed. The desert glass is often attributed to impact glasses, but such a classification is problematic because impact glasses are, by definition, proximal impactites found in the immediate vicinity of the impact site, which, however, has not yet been discovered. It differs from tektites (as distal impact rocks that occur away from the impact site) by having up to 30 times higher water inclusions, up to 0.16%.
