Full leather binding with blind embossed decorations on the boards and spine, 5 raised bands on the spine, and red edges. Bibliophile deluxe illustrated edition of the German translation of the bible by Martin Luther, based on the parchment edition of 1541, which Lucas Cranach illustrated for Prince John II of Anhalt. Beautifully illustrated throughout with colour reproductions of Cranach’s work, including an illustrated title page, and numerous in-text illustrations and decorated initials throughout. The first volume, others were not published.
Some rubbing, bumping, wear, soiling and damage to the boards and spine. A piece of the top of the spine is partly broken off (see photos). The front hinge is split, and the front board is half loose. The leather of the bottom corner of the front board is worn off. Pencil markings on the front and back pastedown endpaper. Very little browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear, the illustrations are vibrant, the paper is crisp, and the binding is solid. Overall, a nice copy in good+ condition.
