Description from the seller
Pair of large majolica plates with blue and green figurative decorations – Italy, 19th century
Description
A refined pair of Italian maiolica plates, handmade and hand-decorated, featuring two different motifs that are cohesive in style and era.
The first plate features a central figurative decoration with a stylized sheep painted in cobalt blue, framed by a double blue circular band and by a green ramina-spotted crown, typical of nineteenth-century popular productions from central Italy.
The second plate, slightly deeper, is decorated with a stylized blue floral motif, enclosed by a rich repeated geometric border, also hand-painted.
Both pieces show: tin-based enamel, characteristic widespread craquelure, and chromatic and textural irregularities that confirm their artisanal production.
They are sideboard or display pieces, originally intended as functional objects, but today are especially valued for rustic or country interior decoration and for collections of antique maiolica.
