Description
Expressive still life with chrysanthemums in a vase, rendered in thick impasto with free brushwork. In Bavaria and in Catholic southern Germany, the chrysanthemum has a pronounced symbolic meaning as a flower of mourning and remembrance and is closely associated with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
On the back of the box there is a handwritten original inscription in German, including the artist's name “Knaus Hermann,” as well as the note “Ruchermifest.” This term denotes a local, folk designation for a funeral Mass with incense around All Saints’ Day and was common in rural Bavaria in the first half of the 20th century.
The work is therefore not only decorative but also of cultural and regional-historical interest.
Stylistic classification:
Typical Bavarian regional painting from the interwar and postwar periods, influenced by late Post-Impressionism. The artist stands outside the avant-garde, yet demonstrates a confident handling of color and materials, as well as a deliberately restrained, somber mood in the painting.
