Notes on the condition
The painting is in good condition for its age. The gilded wooden frame, which aesthetically matches the style very well, with a French moulding, is a free bonus. The frame has some minor signs of wear, cracks and flaking (see photos), which may not be very noticeable from a distance. Nevertheless, a replacement of the frame would be recommended!
Interesting facts:
The painting most likely originates from Felix Ehrlich (September 1, 1866 in Berlin – March 28, 1931 in Berlin). Apart from the signature in the lower left, this is not clearly provable. Ehrlich studied painting from 1883 at the Königsberg Academy of Arts under Carl Steffeck and became his master student in 1888. Back in Berlin, he was appointed court painter in 1896. In the same year he married Bertha Homoth. Felix Ehrlich portrayed Otto von Bismarck as well as Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife, the Crown Prince and his consort, and many high officials and officers. After photographs by court photographers (including Reichard & Lindner, Thomas Heinrich Voigt), he created about sixty oil portraits of the Emperor in various uniforms. Portraits of the monarch as Grand Admiral kept in museum holdings show a moderate influence of Impressionism in their coloring and brushwork. At least three portraits of Wilhelm II in field-gray uniforms were widely distributed during World War I as color reproductions on postcards. Ehrlich was also active as a genre painter. Additionally, he painted animal scenes, religious and historical images. (Source: Wikipedia, more information can also be read there!)
