Description from the seller
Meteorite Canyon Diablo.
The Canyon Diablo meteorite is one of the world's most famous and studied celestial objects. It is the meteorite that formed the famous Meteor Crater (also known as Barringer Crater) located in Arizona, United States.
1. The historical impact
• Age: The impact occurred about 50,000 years ago.
• Location: Colorado Plateau, Coconino County, Arizona.
• Energy: The asteroid measured about 50 meters in diameter and struck Earth with a force equivalent to a nuclear bomb of 20 to 40 megatons (1,000 to 2,000 times Hiroshima!).
• The crater: The impact created a gigantic depression with a diameter of 1,200 m and a depth of 190 m!
2. Physical characteristics and composition
• Type: It is a siderite (metallic meteorite) classified as a coarse octahedrite (IAB-MG group).
• Composition: It is mainly composed of iron (90%) and nickel (about 7%), with traces of rare minerals such as Schreibersite and Troilite.
• Structure: Once polished and etched with acid, it reveals Widmanstätten patterns, crystalline motifs typical of the very slow cooling of metal in space.
• Diamonds: Remarkably, tiny diamonds were discovered in some fragments as early as 1891, formed by the extreme pressure at the moment of impact.
3. Scientific importance
• Age of the Earth: Isotopic analysis of the Canyon Diablo fragments led geochemist Clair Cameron Patterson to determine in 1956 the age of the Earth as about 4.55 billion years.
• Quantity: About 30 tonnes of fragments have been recovered to date, although most of the initial mass vaporized during the collision.
This classic piece, of outstanding quality, must absolutely be included in any meteorite collection!
