Description from the seller
Painting on Panel: 'Portrait of a Woman at Tea Time' - Signed Francesco De Gregorio
A Prestigious First 20th Century Neapolitan Work
I am offering for sale a magnificent and rare portrait on panel, an artwork of great visual and collectible impact, coming from a private collection. This painting is by the renowned Campanian painter Francesco De Gregorio (Ercolano, October 18, 1862 – Naples, July 1, 1939), known for his participation in major national exhibitions.
The masterpiece depicts a portrait of a woman, captured in a moment of quiet as she prepares to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. The placement of the cup is not just a detail but an element of completeness that enhances the simplicity and sweetness of the scene. While adhering to the classical standards of genre portraiture, the work exudes a particular beauty and spirituality, typical of Neapolitan painting from the late 19th to early 20th century. De Gregorio, in fact, participated in important events such as the Quadriennale di Torino (1923) and the Biennale Nazionale d’Arte di Napoli (1921), among many others, confirming his role in the artistic landscape of the period.
The panel is characterized by a skillful contrast between intense tones and subtle shades. The quality of the colors and the painting technique used are of a high standard, highlighting the artist's mastery in capturing the essence and delicacy of the subject. The painting bears a clear signature that reads 'F. De Gregorio, Naples.' Information gathered from antique experts confirms the originality and historical significance of the work, consistent with the artist's activity in the early 20th century.
The portrait is executed on a panel, a support that enhances the vibrancy of the colors and provides durability to the work. The dimensions of the panel are approximately 51 cm x 38 cm. The panel is in good historical condition. It shows some minor defects or imperfections (small openings in the panel as shown in the photo), considered part of its venerable age and authentic charm. The work is accompanied by a frame that, although not considered contemporary and exhibiting some flaws, still offers protection and an immediate display option. It is recommended that the future buyer consider restoring the current frame or inserting a new classic frame, which could further enhance the work and increase its historical and commercial value.
The size of the painting makes it versatile, ideal for enriching any environment (studio, living room, private collection), imparting an immediate sense of prestige, history, and color.
The packaging will be handled with the utmost professionalism, using protective materials to ensure the artwork's safeguarding from shocks and vibrations. The shipment will be carried out by a well-known and reliable courier express, with a tracked and insured delivery service for the full value of the painting, ensuring maximum peace of mind for the buyer.
