Hermès Dies et Hore silk twill square, 90 cm, made in France, in very good vintage condition.
Description from the seller
Hermès scarf Dies et Hore | Created 1963 | Vintage exemplar circa 1965–1972 | Silk
The model
Created in 1963, the Dies et Hore square is an iconic model from the Hermès Paris fashion house. Inspired by ancient astronomical and zodiac calendars, it illustrates the passage of time (Dies) and hours (Hore) through a circular composition rich in celestial symbols, numerals and astrological signs.
Dating of this copy
This specimen is datable to the late 1960s to the early 1970s (approximately 1965–1972), based on concordant criteria:
- period typography and graphic design
- characteristic color palette (deep burgundy, patinated golds, ivory)
- quality and hand of the antique silk twill
- Hermès Paris marking in line with vintage productions
History & astrological symbolism
The design of Dies et Hore is anchored in the tradition of ancient astrology and astronomy, where time was perceived as a cycle governed by the stars. Since Antiquity, celestial calendars linked days, hours, and seasons to the movements of the Sun, the Moon, and the constellations of the zodiac. The central motif, structured around an anthropomorphic sun, evokes this scholarly vision of time, while the concentric circles, numbers, and astrological signs recall the time-measuring instruments used before the modern era. This erudite iconography, characteristic of the 1960s at Hermès, gives the Dies et Hore square a dimension that is at once symbolic, historical and timeless.
Reissue
To date, no modern reissue that is strictly identical to the Dies et Hore model has been documented beyond the original period.
This is therefore a vintage-era square, highly sought after by collectors.
