Gilded brass historiated decorative plate with a knight on horseback – ca. 1880–1910

Beautifully gilded brass decorative plate in a historicist style, probably manufactured in Germany or Austria around 1880–1910.

In the center, a knight on horseback is depicted, rearing up and with a staff or lance in hand. The scene aligns with the romantically medieval iconography that was highly favored in the late 19th century.

The border is richly decorated with pseudo-heraldic symbols and fanciful inscriptions. Images such as a church, a tower, a flowerpot with flowers, a lion, a goat, and artisanal symbols are interspersed with texts that appear Latin or German, but do not form a coherent historical whole. This is typical of decorative boards from this period, meant to convey a stately and historic look.

Condition

Overall in good, original condition.
Black residue present on the underside of the edge and locally on the upper side.
Gold leaf partly worn, consistent with its age.
Small dot print visible in the center.
The plate is not completely flat (slight deformation), which occurs more often with older brass plates.
No cracks or structural damage.
