An exceptional contemporary ceramic object by renowned Japanese potter Uchida Kouichi, titled "Kasai" (彩色/Painted Colors). This sculptural vessel represents the artist's distinctive approach to form and material, demonstrating his signature aesthetic that merges minimalist geometry with organic sensibility.
The work showcases subtle surface variations and refined craftsmanship, featuring pale cream-colored clay with natural speckled texture throughout. The form presents a graceful rounded bowl-like silhouette with an organic pouring lip, lending itself equally to functional use or contemplative object placement. The surface reveals the artist's intimate knowledge of clay behavior and his decisive hand-building techniques.
Uchida Kouichi is recognized internationally for his groundbreaking contemporary ceramic practice. His work has been exhibited globally and is housed in prestigious collections. Having trained through direct immersion in pottery traditions across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas—rather than through conventional apprenticeship—his art embodies a truly cosmopolitan approach to clay. Since establishing his studio in Mie Prefecture in 1992, he has become a leading figure in contemporary Japanese ceramics, known for his ability to synthesize diverse traditions into a coherent artistic vision.
This particular work arrives with its original paulownia wood box (tomobako), which bears the artist's signature and work title, enhancing its provenance and significance. The piece has never been used, retained as a precious gift, and remains in pristine condition.

Artist Profile
Uchida Kouichi (b. 1969) is a leading contemporary Japanese ceramic artist, sculptor, and art director born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. After completing his studies in ceramics at Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics High School, he pursued an unconventional path of artistic education, living and working in pottery communities across Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, and India. This global apprenticeship allowed him to master diverse firing techniques and material traditions.
In 1992, at age 23, Uchida established his independent studio and kiln in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Japan and internationally, including prestigious institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art Crafts, Paramita Museum, and numerous galleries in New York, London, Berlin, and beyond. His work is characterized by a "stateless" aesthetic—drawing freely from global ceramic traditions while maintaining a distinctly contemporary sensibility.
Beyond his practice as a ceramicist, Uchida has become an influential curator and art director. In 2015, he established the BANKO archive design museum in Yokkaichi, dedicated to preserving and presenting the industrial heritage of Banko ware. In 2021, he curated the KATACHI museum at the VISON resort complex in Mie, which showcases food-related objects and vessels from his private collection. He received the Japan Ceramics Association Award in 2019.
