Description from the seller
Rare Art Deco Luxval (Val Saint Lambert) ensemble comprising an oval pressed-glass centerpiece and its matching oval tray, both adorned with the famous 'Scales' moulding. These two models are listed in the Luxval catalog of 1952, although this iconic collection was introduced as early as the 1930s, thus testifying to the longevity and enduring success of this decor with the public.
The centerpiece stands out with a generous oval shape and slightly flared walls. The entire outer surface features a pattern of regular hexagonal scales, made up of straight, slightly recessed facets, arranged in a staggered grid. This decor creates a subtle yet very present play of relief, catching the light and enhancing the depth of the glass. The interior, smoother, nevertheless preserves the motif when viewed through transparency, reinforcing the decorative effect. The edge is softened, with no abrupt break, giving the piece a fluid, functional elegance typical of Luxval's creations.
The oval tray, designed as a complementary yet autonomous element, repeats the same scale-like pattern, this time arranged in a broad peripheral frieze. The center of the tray is deliberately kept more open (like the table’s center), forming a smooth oval reserve that contrasts with the richness of the surrounding motif. This alternation between flat surface and structured relief emphasizes the geometric rigor of the design while preserving a sense of lightness. The profile of the tray is thin, slightly raised, underscoring its use as both decorative and utilitarian.
The set is in excellent overall condition. The centerpiece shows only very light signs of wear, as well as a small discreet chip, without any impact on the overall aesthetics or the piece’s solidity. The top surface, clearly more used, shows more pronounced wear marks, visible on the surface and to the touch, in keeping with older use but still consistent with its age and original use. No cracks or restorations to report.
The Luxval line, developed by the Cristallerie du Val Saint Lambert, aimed to offer, as early as the 1930s, molded glass pieces with a modern, decorative and accessible design, while preserving a high level of execution quality. The décor “Écailles”, resolutely Art Deco in its geometric and repetitive treatment, established itself as one of the most emblematic motifs of the range, to the point of being kept in the catalog until the early 1950s. This ensemble perfectly illustrates the successful alliance between aesthetics, functionality and industrial know-how that made Luxval and Val Saint Lambert renowned far beyond Belgian borders.
