Sasanian Bronze Large Bowl (No reserve price)

A finely cast and hammered Sasanian bronze bowl, featuring a hemispherical container. The vessel features a slightly flattened base and a thin rim. Its slightly convex walls render an elegant continuously curved profile. The interior is decorated with incised concentric circles to the centre of the base on both the interior and exterior. The bowl has maintained its beautiful sheen, along with some patination to its surface. There is a short crack at the rim which has been repaired with glue. The Sasanians succeeded the Achaemenids, establishing an Empire which, at its peak, expanded from the Euphrates to the Indus Rivers. Sasanian art borrowed from Near Eastern and Greco-Roman traditions, and adapted these cultures’ iconography to the local repertoire. Measurements (circa): D 21cm x H 5cm Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
