ETHNOGRAPHIC OBJECTS – PAPUA NEW GUINEA
First half of the 20th century.

1. Ceremonial Axe, Highlands – Papua New Guinea
Incised wood, iron blade. Length 48 cm.

Prestige axe from the central Highlands, with a forged iron blade of double lateral extension, one straight and one curved. The hard wood handle features a rich geometric decoration carved, typical of the Wahgi/Chimbu region groups. Item destined for ceremonies and male dances, not for everyday use. Dark, homogeneous patina.

Provenance: European private collection.
Condition: good, wear consistent with age.

2. Ritual dagger with anthropomorphic head, Sepik area – Papua New Guinea
Carved wood. Length 16 cm

Small ritual object carved in dark wood, with an anthropomorphic figure characterized by an elongated face, prominent nose and incised eyes, style attributable to groups of central Sepik (Iatmul/Abelam). Slender body and tapered tip, probable ceremonial use or as a symbolic tool in initiatory contexts. Beautiful ancient patina from handling.

Condition: fair; small losses and wear consistent.

3. War or prestige mace, Highlands – Papua New Guinea
Hardwood carved. 43 cm

Traditional mace of the central Highlands, with a globular head carved from a single piece of hard wood. Emblematic tool of warrior culture and representation of male prestige, used both in traditional combat and during ceremonial dances. Dark patina and surfaces worn from use.
