Pietro Scoppetta was an Italian painter active between Naples and the major European capitals. After an initial approach to architectural studies, he chose painting, training under Giacomo Di Chirico. Settling in Naples from 1891, he worked in a context of profound urban and cultural transformation linked to the Plan for Reclamation and the lively atmosphere of the Belle Époque. He participated in the exhibitions of the Società Promotrice di Napoli and collaborated in decorating the Caffè Gambrinus, frescoing its vaults together with the leading Neapolitan artists of the time. He also worked as an illustrator for important magazines and had illustrious admirers, among them Umberto I. Between 1897 and 1903 he stayed for extended periods in Paris, then in London and finally in Rome. At his death, the Venice Biennale of 1920 dedicated a personal room to him.
