Description from the seller
Unique and rare painting "Hitler and Göring" by the Rotterdam-based Pop Art artist Hans Hollenbach (1943–1976). In this powerful work, Hollenbach confronts the viewer with the principal perpetrators of the bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940, a traumatic event inextricably linked to the city where the artist lived and worked.
Hollenbach is part of the first generation of Rotterdam Pop Art artists who, in the mid-1960s, drew inspiration from American Pop Art. In postwar Rotterdam, this movement developed into a raw, direct, and socially critical visual language, far removed from academic conventions. Hollenbach's work is free, outspoken, and unmistakably rooted in his time.
In addition to his paintings, often executed on a large scale, such as this painting, Hollenbach also created three-dimensional works in plastic and metal. His oeuvre also shows influences from American Abstract Expressionism, which gives his work added power and dynamism. He regularly exhibited in group shows and collaborated with artists such as Jacob Zekveld, Woody van Amen, Daan van Golden, and Mathieu Ficheroux.
Until around 1970, Hans Hollenbach was actively present in the Dutch art scene. His early death and the relatively short period of activity have made his work relatively rare.
The canvas is in excellent condition: sturdy and undamaged. Bottom left signed "Hollenbach '65".
Due to its size, this painting cannot be shipped.
