The Silmarillion, first edition (1977), English hardback with dust jacket, edited by Christopher Tolkien, published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd., London, 365 pages, including a map of Beleriand.
Description from the seller
First edition. With original dustwrapper (price net 4.95 GBP is intact). George Allen and Unwin Ltd., London 1977. Edited by Christopher Tolkien. Including a map of Beleriand.
" 'The Silmarillion' is the central stock of J. R. R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work that he could not publish in his lifetime because it grews with him. Its origins stretch back sixty years, long before 'The Hobbit', which was independently conceived but was caught up int what he called the 'branching acquisitive theme' from which finally emerged 'The Lord of the Rings'.
'The Silmarillion', though published last and posthumously, has the primacy, both in terms of the author's life and in terms of his content. It is the story of the First Age in Tolkien's world, the ancient drama to which characters in 'The Lord of the Rings' look back, and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part" (from the front flap)
Book is fine with miniscule dusting to blue top edge of text block. Otherwise clean and bright. Former owners signature on ffep.
Dustwrapper is fine with one very small white dot on the back panel. Now preserved with a transparent archival sleeve.
