Description from the seller
Saint Rita of Cascia (1381–1457) is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. She is known worldwide as the patroness of hopeless causes and of impossible matters. Her life story is marked by patience, forgiveness, and tremendous perseverance.
Black habit and veil → Augustinian Order
Crucifix with Christ in her arms → her intense identification with the suffering of Christ
Wound/mark on the forehead → reference to the thorn wound that she, according to tradition, received.
Red roses at the foot → the symbol of Saint Rita (miracle of the roses, patron saint of impossible causes)
Rosary on the belt → typical of devotional images from the 19th–20th centuries
The symbol of the rose;
The most famous symbol of Rita is the rose. According to the legend, the ailing Rita, at the end of her life, asked for a rose from the garden of her parental home. Although it was the dead of winter, there was indeed a blooming rose to be found there. Therefore, on her feast day (May 22), roses are often blessed.
The thorn in her forehead;
Rita is also known for the stigmata. While she prayed before the crucifix, a thorn from Jesus' crown is said to have loosened and pierced her forehead. She wore this painful wound for the rest of her life as a sign of her union with the suffering of Christ. In this image, that is clearly visible.
30 cm high
Positive points:
Beautiful modeling of the habit (deep folds)
Strong facial expression (emotional, typical for the interwar period)
No major cracks or restorations visible.
Drawbacks:
Normal edge damage to the foot
Light paint wear (fully acceptable for the age)
