Some descriptive elements:
This Rodin Museum exhibition catalogue confronts the works of American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) with those of Rodin, in a vigorous dialogue. The former, who sculpts bodies through his lens, and the latter, who throughout his career relied on photography, seem to be bound by nothing. One chases the perfect form, the other stubbornly seeks to capture movement in matter.
Nothing spontaneous about Mapplethorpe the meticulous, while Rodin entrusts himself to the flashes of the gesture, even if that means accepting its accidental expression. The hyper-controlled compositions of one echo the tormented, rounded forms of the other. The fragmentation of the bodies, their compulsive examination, the drapery that barely hides them, mark a common, equally sensual quest. Separated by nearly a century, the two works display numerous similarities and yield striking diptychs.
A unique, majestic copy, sold out, and yet just as timeless!
