70 x 70 cm
2025

The light from the left, the reflection of the canvas on the right. A lot of signs of wear. Half-polished. This tobacco spot has kept me busy for a long time, so to speak. But it was worth it. A beautiful journey in search of the answer to my recurring question 'what do I actually see?'.
I am Melinda Rutgers, a painter. I completed my training as a portrait painter at Portretschool Amsterdam. Currently, my focus is on painting still lifes. I paint realistically in oil and am inspired by everyday moments and objects that often go unnoticed. I am fascinated by different materials and textures, and in my work, I explore how light, texture, and detail can together evoke a mood; a quest to find the boundary between seeing and feeling.
Since 2024, I have been part of the 'Masters of Realism' group. A great recognition of my craftsmanship and contribution to the tradition of Dutch Realism.
