This painting depicts an old brass vase, found at a thrift shop. The metal is hand-worked. The hammering creates a unique texture and thus a playful interplay of light and shadow. The irregularities and the subtly skewed form give the piece character and make it lively. For me, this painting is about capturing that artisanal detail and the way light embraces the different textures.
I am Melinda Rutgers, a painter. I completed my training as a portrait painter at Portretschool Amsterdam. Currently, my focus is on painting still lifes. I paint realistically in oil and am inspired by everyday moments and objects that often go unnoticed. I am fascinated by different materials and textures, and in my work, I explore how light, texture, and detail can together evoke a mood; a quest to find the boundary between seeing and feeling.
Since 2024, I have been part of the 'Masters of Realism' group. A great recognition of my craftsmanship and contribution to the tradition of Dutch Realism.
