Description from the seller
Hermann Hesse, Beneath the Wheel
Fischer Verlag, Berlin 1906
The very rare first edition appeared as early as October 1905, with the printed imprint 1906.
18.5 × 12.5 cm, 294 pp. and 8 pages of publisher's advertising for, among others, Thomas Mann, Arthur Schnitzler and Hermann Hesse's 'Peter Camenzind'.
Original illustrated, embossed linen binding, title design by Emil Rudolf Weiss. Original bookmark and gilt top edge. Brown front and back endpapers. Name inscription (fountain pen) to the Christmas recipient: "Gertrud Wanner, Christmas 1905", very beautiful large ex libris.
Hermann Hesse tells in Beneath the Wheel the fate of a gifted adolescent who fails both at a pedagogy that demands of him one-sidedly and at his own self. In this story, Hesse processes his own experiences from the Maulbronn Monastery seminary. In Japan, this work enjoys national cult status.
Very good to excellent condition, clean pages. Almost no foxing. Very good to excellent condition, slight signs of use appropriate for age. Pages partly slightly wavy. Very slight tilt of the book spine. Gold headband faded, lightly bumped page edges. (See pictures).
Overall, a very nice overall impression, one of the most sought-after Hesse first editions.
