Hafez - Diwan - 1708

A fine Diwan bi-folio manuscript page from the most famous Sufi poet, Hafez dated AH120, which translates to 1708/9. The folio is in very good condition with little wear. It is written in black nasta'liq calligraphy, with gilted gold framing and gilded panels, with the wording separated by pillows of gold gilt. This is a good example of the finer editions of the Dewan, with a very attractive layout of blue cartouches dividing the folio.

The Divan of Hafez (Persian: دیوان حافظ) is the collected works of Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfeẓ-e Shīrāzī (c. 1315–1390), a celebrated 14th-century Persian poet from Shiraz who is considered one of the greatest masters of the ghazal (lyrical poem). His poetry, which covers themes of divine love, mystical longing, wine, and social critique of religious hypocrisy, was compiled posthumously by his admirers. Revered throughout the Persian-speaking world as Lesan al-Ghayb (the Tongue of the Unseen Realms), the Divan is not only cherished as a pinnacle of literature but is also famously used for fal-e Hafez (divination), where individuals randomly open the book to seek guidance on life's dilemmas.
