AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Very rare and exceptional two-handled mortar, heavy, with a powerful decoration. Bronze mortar and pestle with a dark patina from the early 17th century, probably Italian, Sicily? The decoration consists of 6 busts of Minerva in a helmet, spaced by four crenellated buttresses and 2 handles (one pierced). The neck is flared and stepped. Mortar weight alone: 3.267 kg. Mortar height: 9.5 cm, diameter: 14.8 cm, base diameter: 10.5 cm. Pestle: 22.5 cm long, weighing 717 g. No restorations, no cracks, ... it sounds like a bell. It is very rare to find a mortar with protruding crenellated buttresses in excellent condition, which makes this piece highly desirable. Total weight: 3.985 kg (8.78 pounds).
