Luis Corvalán was an important Chilean politician and a long-time leading figure of the Communist Party of Chile. From 1961 to 1973, he served as a senator of the Republic of Chile and was one of the most influential representatives of the Chilean left in the 20th century. He was widely known as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Chile and a close associate of President Salvador Allende. After the military coup in 1973, he was imprisoned and later expelled to the Soviet Union. Corvalán became a symbol of political persecution as well as of international solidarity during the Cold War.
