Wood Art Deco planter dating to the early 20th century (circa 1920s), measuring 41 cm high by 28 cm wide by 28 cm deep and weighing 2.5 kg.
Description from the seller
Antique Art Deco Planter / Cachepot – Ebonised Wood with Gilt Decoration, 1920s –
In excellent condition – No reserve.
A highly decorative and characterful wooden planter or jardinière, dating to the early 20th century (circa 1920s). Executed in vibrant red lacquer with hand-painted floral folk motifs, this piece reflects traditional European decorative arts, likely inspired by Alpine, Tyrolean, or Eastern European folk art traditions.
The planter features four elegantly shaped panels, each adorned with symmetrical floral compositions in warm tones, contrasted by black corner pilasters with hand-painted accents. The turned feet and finials, topped with gilt-painted wooden knobs, add a sculptural, architectural quality, giving the piece a strong presence.
The interior is fully painted in matching red and shows authentic signs of age and use, consistent with its century-old character, without affecting structural integrity or display appeal.
This is a striking decorative object that works beautifully as a planter, umbrella stand, log holder, or purely as a statement decorative piece in an interior with Art Deco, Arts & Crafts, folk, or eclectic influences.
During the 1920s, Art Deco design embraced strong geometry, stylised natural motifs, and luxurious surface finishes. Ebonised wood combined with gilt detailing was widely used for interior accessories, offering an elegant alternative to lacquered or metal objects. Pieces like this planter were intended for refined domestic interiors, bridging classical ornament with modern form.
