The painter Gerardus Johannes Delfgaauw lived and worked in Rijswijk since 1914. He largely formed himself and worked in an impressionistic-naturalistic manner (see Lexicon P.A. Scheen), predominantly in and around Rotterdam and The Hague, where he painted many impressionistic landscapes, city and harbor views, and winter scenes.
Delfgaauw's work was already highly regarded in his time, and because the demand for his work was great and, despite his prolific output, he wanted to maintain quality at a high level, he painted a large portion of his work (often commissioned by the art dealer Van Gessel) under the pseudonym H. van Gessel.
