Anton Mauve was an influential Dutch painter and one of the central figures of the Hague School, a movement known for its realistic and often melancholic portrayal of the Dutch landscape. Mauve was born in Zaandam in 1838 and developed into a master at painting peasants, sheep, and rural scenes. His work is praised for the subtle color tones, the atmospheric treatment of light, and the restrained poetry of everyday life.
Mauve also played an important role in the development of Vincent van Gogh, who admired him and learned to paint in the open air from him. Despite his relatively short life, Mauve left a substantial and beloved body of work that is collected and exhibited worldwide.
In the frame, the work measures 45.5 x 37.5 cm. The panel itself measures 32.5 x 24.5 cm.
