August Rieger's artistic talent was not nurtured by his parents, which is why he initially worked as a freelance artist and, as his main occupation, as a tax official.

His real name was August Vorhauer, and he worked under the pseudonym August Rieger.

His great role model was Carl Moll, from whose style and color palette he drew great inspiration.
Over time, the two artists got to know each other and a close friendship developed.

From the 1930s onward, several art collectors took notice of Rieger, who particularly valued the masterful lighting of his works.
The preferred motifs include the surroundings of Vienna, the Vienna suburbs, Grinzing, Sievering, Klosterneuburg, Perchtoldsdorf, and the Prater meadows.
