Pair of carved solid walnut seats from Italy, dating to 1850-1900, in antique style, each with a high sculpted back and a full seating surface, overall dimensions 108 cm high, 38 cm wide and 38 cm deep, seating height 50 cm, weight about 6 kg, in good condition with minor signs of age and wear.
Description from the seller
Pair of carved wooden seats – Italy, 18th–19th century
Origin: Italy (central-northern area)
Material: carved solid wood (likely walnut)
Technique: full-round hand engraving.
Number of pieces: pair
Description
A refined pair of solid-wood representative chairs finely carved, attributable to Italian production of the 18th century, of a fully Baroque taste.
The tall, contoured backrests feature a rich decoration of volutes, foliage, and palmettes, culminating at the top with a carved mascaron of strong expressive character, a typical element of ceremonial and noble furnishings of the period.
The lower horizontal band is adorned with rosette motifs and grooves, while the lower structures, massive and carved, confer the seats an imposing stage presence. The solid seat, without padding, confirms its representational purpose more than everyday use.
The engraving is deep, continuous, and structural—not applied—with subtle asymmetries that attest to the artisanal craftsmanship. The original dark patina, obtained from the natural aging of the wood and from ancient waxes, lends great warmth and authenticity to the whole.
Condition
In good state of preservation, with normal signs of wear and usage consistent with age. Structurally solid. Small modern restorations noted.
Furniture with a strong decorative impact, ideal for:
representative offices
important entries
historic settings or antique collections
high-end stage sets
Sold in pairs.
