Description from the seller
Medieval gilded copper brooch with a square frame, decorated with cast ornamentation on both sides and a cast pin in a narrowing in one corner. The frame has a trapezoidal cross-section, revealing three facets on the front. The inner facet is undecorated. Both the top and outer facets are decorated with a row of dots between narrow ribs, of which there are three. In the two corners, away from the narrowing for the pin and the pin tip, the row of dots and the ribs are interrupted by cast cross-shaped motifs. The flat back is decorated between the ribs with diamond-shaped crosses and plain squares in low relief. These are not arranged alternately, and there are more crosses. Details on this side are less clearly visible. The loop of the pin is oval on the outside and rectangular in cross-section, while that of the tapering shaft is round. At the junction between the two, there is a relatively large, circular, and seemingly non-integral disc collar. A brooch from Langford, Nottinghamshire, is, although larger, very similar in almost every detail (DENO-58AC71). However, the back shows more squares and some rectangles.
15 x 15 x 2.5 mm.
Length of the pin: 20 mm.
Diameter of the collar: 4.5 mm.
Weight: 3.33 g. 13th century.
