Jolly Roger flag from the United Kingdom, made of cotton, measuring 59 x 91 cm, and in good condition.
Description from the seller
The Jolly Roger is the classic pirate flag, recognizable by the skull with crossed bones on a black background. This iconic symbol has been associated with piracy at sea since the 17th century. Possibly its origin can be traced to the Barbary corsairs, who were active in that period around the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic coast. The choice of black could furthermore be linked to the traditional Islamic black standard flag, which strengthens the connection with North African pirates.
One of the earliest known references to this skull symbol dates back to 1625, when during a slave raid on Cornwall there was a report of a flag with a skull-like emblem. Later, the Jolly Roger became the recognizable emblem of pirates worldwide. It served not only as a flag but also as a psychological weapon: its sight was meant to instill fear and compel the opponent to surrender without a fight.
Dimensions 59 x 91 cm
