Description from the seller
General identification
Brand: Heuer (Pre-TAG period)
Model: Carrera "Dato" (Automatic)
Reference: 110.253 G (Grey/Silver Dial)
Estimated period: Circa 1974 - 1978
Confidence level: 95% (Identification confirmed by the case architecture and the 12-gauge caliber)
Detailed analysis
Case: stainless steel, C-shape (tonneau) form, typical of the 1970s. There are surface scratches and signs of wear, but the chamfers seem to have retained their original profile without any excessive polishing.
Dial: sun-brushed gray dial with black sub-dials (inverted “Panda” configuration). Presence of pronounced patina and visible traces of oxidation/pitting on the surface, which is common on these references but affects the overall aesthetic. Date window at 6 o'clock.
Hands: hour and minute baton-style hands with a black insert. The central chronograph seconds hand is bright orange, in keeping with the era's "Racing" aesthetic code.
Crown & Pushers: Crown located on the left (9 o'clock), a key feature of the Chronomatic movement. Pushers on the right.
Bracelet: A steel “rally” style bracelet with wide perforations. Although it is vintage, it seems to be a generic or accessory model rather than the original Gay Frères bracelet, which is usually thinner at the lugs.
Overall coherence: The piece is authentic in its major components. The condition of the dial suggests past exposure to moisture.
Movement & Mechanics
Type: automatic chronograph with micro-rotor.
Identification of the caliber: Caliber 12 (evolution of Caliber 11).
Manufacturer: Heuer-Leonidas SA (the result of the collaboration with Breitling, Hamilton-Buren and Dubois Dépraz).
Finishes: Engraved bridge "HEUER LEONIDAS SA". Cam mechanism, micro-rotor integrated beneath the chronograph bridge.
Visible condition: The movement appears clean, with no signs of immediate rust on the bridges, although a full overhaul is imperative in view of the dial’s condition.
Period: the 1970s.
Production & rarity
Production estimate: These models were not produced in large volumes, unlike the Carerra models from the 1960s. Production is estimated at a few thousand units for this specific reference.
Rarity index: Uncommon. It is a piece sought after by 'Heuer Vintage' collectors for its iconic movement and its very distinctive 70s look.
Market availability: Rarely available in new-old-stock condition; it is regularly found in themed auction sales.
