Rare and complete 17th century edition of Pliny the Elder's monumental Naturalis Historia, one of the most influential encyclopaedic works of antiquity , covering natural science, geography, zoology, botany, mineralogy, medicine and art.
This 1669 Hackiana edition was printed in the Dutch Republic and representsthe early modern scholarly transmission of classical knowledge. The work had a profound inpact on Renaissance and early Enlightment science and learning.
Beautiful engraved title page with rich allegoric imaginary ( cosmos , earth, animals, natural elements)
Additional engraved ornametation and emblemic imaginary throughout.
Decorative headpieces and initials.
Binding: contemporary or slighty later full calf leather bindings, gilt titels and decorative tools on the spines , uniform bindings across all three volumes.
Condition: overall good and honest condition for a 17the century work, expected age-related wear: rubbing to bindings, wear to spine ends and corners, some discoloration spotting and occasional foxing, consistent with age. Hinges and bindings remain intact, solid text blocks. No modern restaurations observed.
Attractive, collectible example suitable for private collectors, libraries or institutions.
